(Truly Redeemed and Sanctified in Him)
The Spirit of Elijah
and
Elisha’s Double Portion Of His Spirit
Welcome to this T.R.A.S.H. Talk where we will take a look at Elijah and Elisha and some of their parallels to Yahweh, John the Baptist, and Yeshua (and I’m sure it is not an exhaustive list).
Since September 2025, the Holy Spirit has been talking to me about Elisha (pronounced Eh-lee-shah) and I believe the timing is key for this hour. I see Yeshua beginning to pour out a double portion of His spirit once again on those He has called in the final harvest season. He is preparing a remnant within His remnant for a mighty work—one that is not to be taken lightly and one that can not be fulfilled until His appointed time.
It’s been several months and countless hours of me listening, waiting, studying, and praying about what He is about to release. Even as I type this, the Spirit of Yahweh is heavy upon me. I pray for His wisdom, understanding, counsel, might, knowledge, and more reverence of Him each day. This post can not begin to do justice to all He is revealing in this hour so I will just share some tidbits and a reminder of Yeshua’s redeeming love and grace as it pertains to this topic. I also want to mention that this post is a precursor to a deeper teaching on the Tabernacle of Yahweh. He has been revealing to me how interwoven the two are.
For a timeline reference, the timeline for Elijah’s and Elisha’s ministry is below. Yeshua and John the Baptist were born around 4 BC and were six months apart in age.
865 BC – Elijah begins to prophecy to Ahab, King of Israel (He was a prophet prior to being sent to the king).
864 -862 BC – Elijah anoints Elisha to be his successor (Elisha was about 20 years old when anointed and walked with Elijah for about 10 years – dates are approx.).
850 BC – Elijah is taken to heaven by chariots of fire.
850 BC – Elisha begins his ministry of miracles around age 30.
Yeshua began His ministry at age 30 some 840 +/- years later. John the Baptist began his ministry at age 30.
| Elijah | John the Baptist |
| 2 Kings 1 – Identified as a prophet who was a hairy man wearing a leather belt. | Matt 3:4 – Identified as a prophet wearing clothing made of camel’s skin and a leather belt. |
| Elijah had a wilderness experience and was supernaturally fed bread and meat, and drank water from a brook. | John was a voice from the wilderness and ate locusts and honey. |

As I mentioned above, since last September, the Holy Spirit has been talking to me about Elisha. This all began with a miraculous healing I received by His grace in August. I was in the hospital and had major surgery. The CT scan revealed the need to remove a large mass (6lb.) from my abdomen and a portion of my intestines which would require me to wear a colostomy bag for a period of time and potentially forever.
Three days prior to going to the hospital emergency room (ER), I was in our kitchen canning when I heard, “Stay in My Presence, Norma.” I felt fine at the moment and wondered why He spoke this. A short time after I heard His voice again, “Stay in My Presence.” I stopped what I was doing and went into the living room and began to praise and worship Him. I put on the song, “In Your Presence” by Paul Wilbur and sat for a while. I finished my canning and my day carried on as usual. I went to sleep that night feeling fine. A little after midnight I woke up to the most excruciating pain in my stomach and vomiting I have ever had. Long story short, I thought it was food poisoning and after 3 days of not getting better and being dehydrated, I went to the ER. On August 13, I had a team of two oncologists preparing me for the worst possible outcome. I felt peace in my spirit, I was calm and was not the slightest bit concerned about whatever was about to happen because I remained in His presence. The doctor even commented that I was taking the news well. I literally felt as though I was watching the whole event unfold and not being part of it, although I was.
The surgery began and the Gastric Oncologist called my husband after an hour telling him she wasn’t needed in there. The Gynecologic Oncologist came out an hour after that and told my husband she and her team could not believe their eyes, but everything looked beautiful. They removed a large cyst that was clean in every way and the intestines were miraculously perfect. She even hugged my husband and said she was so excited at what she experienced. I only share this personal story because of this post. At my post op appointment, the oncologist said, “I didn’t even need to see you today but I have got to just share with you again what the CT scan showed and what happened. It’s a miracle.” We laughed and cried in her office. She asked for prayer and asked that we please keep her in our prayers as she rarely gets to give people good news. Our God is in the miracle and healing business today! The entire encounter wasn’t about me, but so that His glory could be shown to a doctor (or two) who much needed to know He is real. Hallelujah!
It was sometime in early October 2025 that Yeshua began talking to me about Elisha. At one point, I had a dream where I was in a classroom with Him as my teacher. He was standing at a blackboard teaching me so much and I felt like I was hearing but I was struggling to fully comprehend all He was saying. It was as though my mind was receiving it but my spirit was having trouble interpreting the enormity of the message. I remember thinking, “I just don’t understand what you want me to know.” Just as I opened my eyes, Yeshua said, “2 Kings!”. When I opened my Bible to 2 Kings, there it was. Elisha! I said, “Okay, Yeshua, you have my full attention now.”
In the book of 2Kings, chapter 1, Elijah is identified as a prophet who was a hairy man wearing a leather belt around his waist. His garments of hair were from animal skin. In Matthew 3:4, John the baptist is identified as a prophet wearing clothing made of camels skin and a leather belt. The mention of their garments tell us that neither were concerned with fancy apparel, appearance, or luxuries of the world.
Elijah had a wilderness season where he was supernaturally fed bread and meat and drank water from the brook. Bread and meat are symbolic for sustenance for life and maturity to sonship; Yeshua is the Bread of Life and water is the Holy Spirit. Yeshua had a wilderness experience as well where He was tempted by Satan to turn stones into bread and His rebuke to Satan was, “It is written that man shall not live on bread alone but by every word of Yahweh.” Bread is the Word, Yeshua is the Bread of Life.
John the Baptist was a voice from the wilderness where he ate locusts and honey (symbolic of judgment and blessings; bitter judgment and redemption). Yeshua came to redeem mankind from eternal judgment.
Elijah prepared the way for his successor Elisha, John the baptist prepared with way for Yeshua. John baptized with water, Yeshua baptizes with the Holy Spirit.
The correlation between Elijah and John is not exclusive to the three mentioned above, as they both separated themselves from the religious systems of their days. They were both powerful prophets of Yahweh. They both dealt with corrupt leaders, i.e. Elijah to national leaders and John to religious leaders. They both were sought to be killed by evil queens, and they both went through a period of despair.
Both men warned of the wrath to come because of the wickedness and abominations of the kings and/or religious leaders to whom they were sent. Elijah to king Ahab and Azaiah; John to the Pharisees and Sadducees etc.
Let’s look at some parallels of Elisha and Yeshua.
| Elisha | Yeshua |
| Performed more miracles that Elijah – multiplied a widows oil, purified water, healed leprosy, made an ax float, purified poisoned stew, caused an entire army to be blind | Performed more miracles that John – healed the sick, cast out demons, raised from the dead, set multitudes of captives free. |
| Raised a widows son back to life | Raised Lazarus back to life |
| Parted the Jordan River | Walked on water and turned water into wine |
| Confronted corrupt leaders (Ahab/Jezebel) | Confronted corrupt religious leaders (Pharisees/Sadducees) |
| Given a double portion of the spirit of Elijah | Given all power and authority of heaven and earth |
With Yeshua being the ultimate authority, He made it clear that without being born again of the Spirit, one could not enter the kingdom of Heaven but most people could not understand the things of the Spirit. They were carnal in their thinking and focused on things of the world. Pride is their god.
Nicodemus was a prime example of one who could not understand things of the Spirit and he was a well respected Pharisee, a teacher of the Word!
In John 3:12-14, Yeshua said to Nicodemus, “If I have told you earthly things and you do not believe, how will you believe if I tell you heavenly things? No one has ascended to heaven but He who came down from heaven, that is, the Son of Man, who is in heaven. And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.”
When Yeshua spoke to Nicodemus, He was letting him know that He IS the spirit of Elijah. The name Elijah is the english version of the Hebrew word, Eliyahu, and means Yahweh is God. You can see a kingdom mystery that Elijah, the prophet of the old testament, was the Spirit of Yahweh incarnate and hence the only reason he could ascend into heaven. Yeshua said it in John 3:13—No one has ascended to heaven but He who came down from heaven…
This is why Yahweh allowed only three of Yeshua’s disciples to witness the transfiguration of Yeshua, standing on the mountain with Moses and Elijah (Moses = water/Law, and Elijah spirit of Yah/prophet). In Matthew 17:9, When Peter, James, and Yeshua’s brother John, witnessed that moment, “Yeshua commanded them, saying ‘tell the vision to no one until the Son of Man is risen from the dead.’” This will be key in the parallel to Elisha so stay with me.
In Matthew 16:27, Yeshua tells his disciples that he is going to return in the glory of Yahweh, with His angels, he makes a declaration in verse 28 saying, “Assuredly, I say to you, there are some standing here who shall not taste death till they see the Son of Man coming in His kingdom.” Forty days after His resurrection, they saw the Son of Man ascend into heaven with the clouds. It gets better! Ten days later, He pours out a double portion of His spirit on His disciples and fulfills two prophecies:
1“Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. 2In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. 3And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also. 4And where I go you know, and the way you know.”
5Thomas said to Him, “Lord, we do not know where You are going, and how can we know the way?”
6Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me. (John 14:1-6)
and
12“Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father. 13And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14If you ask anything in My name, I will do it.
15“If you love Me, keep My commandments. 16And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever— 17the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you. 18I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you. (John 14:12-18)
Let’s now look at a type and shadow through Elijah and Elisha. We know Elijah means Yahweh is God. Elisha means God is Salvation (deliverance, to rescue). In the old testament days, Yahweh’s presence was with the Israelites and He was pretty harsh when it came to their rebellion and idol worship. In the new testament, He returns in the Spirit as Yeshua (name means Salvation), but this time, He comes with a double portion of his grace and does far more miracles among men than Elijah or Elisha did. He is the God of second chances for sinners to repent and receive redemption through Yeshua and His finished work on the cross and resurrection from the dead.
In Matthew 17:10, Yeshua’s disciples asked him, “why do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?” Jesus answered them and said, “Indeed, Elijah is coming first and will restore all things. But I say to you that Elijah has come already, and they did not know him but did to him whatever they wished. Likewise, the Son of Man is also about to suffer at their hands.” Then the disciples understood that He spoke to them of John the Baptist.
I want to go back to 2 Kings 2 and point out something significant. Pay close attention to the three places mentioned in scripture, the three times Elisha refuses to be left behind, and the significance of Yahweh sending Elijah to Bethel, Jericho, and the Jordan River.
Chapter two begins in Gilgal with Elijah telling Elisha to stay where he was at, for Yahweh was sending him to Bethel. Elijah knew his appointed time was drawing near to be taken to heaven. Elisha says, “As the Lord lives, and as your soul lives, I will not leave you!”
Why Bethel?
Bethel, at that time was under the oppressive rule of Jeroboam. The nation of Israel had been divided and ten of the tribes went north with Jeroboam, while Judah and Benjamin stayed in the southern portion. In 1 Kings 13, you can read how Jeroboam had rebelled against Yahweh, set up idolatrous worship centers, including golden calves, and made not only himself a High Priest, but allowed others to become priests that were NOT of the Levitical priesthood line of Aaron. False prophets abounded. The Israelites were told to worship Yah at Jeroboam’s worship centers and not travel to Yah’s worship center in Jerusalem. There is a blog post you can read about this called “Have We Become An Apostate Church?”
We are not told why Elijah went to Bethel, but we can only imagine, given the state of the place. That which was once named as the House of Yah, had now become the house of Jeroboam. So, Elijah and Elisha arrive and some sons of prophets pull Elisha aside and say to him, “Do you know that the Lord will take away your master from over you today?” Elisha responds with, “Yes, I know; keep silent!” meaning ‘don’t tell anyone’. This was because the appointed time had not yet come.
Let’s now look at the parallel to Yeshua’s ministry. With all the miracles Yeshua did among the people in the land of Israel, most all of those who he healed, he pleaded with them to tell no one. This was because His time had not yet come to go public with who He is as the Messiah. But not only did he tell those who he healed to be silent, he also commanded the demons to be silent. Elisha understood the timing of things.
Elijah soon was told to go to Jericho. Again, he tells Elisha to stay there, in Bethel, for he is being sent to Jericho; and again, Elisha says, “As the Lord lives, and as your soul lives, I will not leave you!” Was Elisha being defiant? Not at all, he was in covenant with Elijah.
Why Jericho?
The Hebrew name Jericho means “Fragrant place” from the Hebrew word re’ach (scent/aroma). The name Jericho also means “Moon City” from the word yareach (moon) which could relate to those who worshiped the moon in the region. Both indicating a mixture of moon worship and the fragrance of the city’s abundance of palms, rose gardens, balsams, and more. But there was also a population of Israelites there who observed the Law of Moses.
Elijah and Elisha traveled to Jericho and, like their trip to Bethel, the sons of prophets who were at Jericho came to Elisha and said, “Do you know that the Lord will take away your master from over you today?” Elisha responds with, “Yes, I know; keep silent!” Again, Elisha knows it was not the appointed time.
It is not a coincidence Yah sends Elijah to Jericho. This was the city that in 1405-1400 BC, Joshua had been sent by a messenger of Yahweh, and told to take all his men of war, along with seven priests with seven trumpets of rams horns before the ark, and march around the city for six days and on the seventh day, march around it seven times then have the priests blow the shofars. They would all give a great shout and Yahweh would supernaturally cause the walls of Jericho to fall flat. (Joshua 6:)
The walls of Jericho were a stronghold that prevented the people from going out or coming in. It represents walls, obstacles, religious or worldly systems that keep us from Yahweh. In Elijah’s day, the city of Jericho had a large farming and trade industry with livestock, merchants, etc. However, they also had a issue of bad water which affected their agriculture and livestock causing unfruitfulness. Elisha healed the water of the Jordan so that livelihoods could be restored and become fruitful again.
The parallel to Yeshua’s ministry is that He came to tear down the strongholds that kept the people from Yahweh. He came to set the captives free. He did many miracles, cast out unclean spirits, and restored the true Law of Yahweh. The Law of Moses had become a stumbling block, the Pharisees, Sadducees and Heretics had clogged the wells (spiritual water) and Yeshua brought healing. Marching around the city for 6 days represents the 6,000 years since creation (the 6th day), and on the 7th day, (Yeshua’s return for a millennial reign). Walls of Jericho falling down is a match to the wheat and tares parable (don’t uproot the tares. The angels with gather them to burn – i.e. their walls will fall down)
In Matthew 12:29, Yeshua is being verbally attacked by the Pharisees because He cast demons out of God fearing men and women, setting the captives free. And He tells them, “How can one enter a strong mans’ house and plunder his goods, unless he first binds the strong man? And then he will plunder his house. He who is not with me is against me, and he who does not gather with Me scatters abroad.”
In John 7:37, Yeshua said, ‘On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.” But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those believing in Him would receive; for the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.’
2 Kings 2:6 begins in Jericho with Elijah telling Elisha to stay where he was at, for the Yahweh was sending him on to the Jordan (river). How long they were in Jericho, we do not know but Elijah knew his appointed time was drawing very near to be taken to heaven. Elisha says, “As the Lord lives, and as your soul lives, I will not leave you!”
Why the Jordan River?
The Jordan is the place of crossing over into the promised land, spiritually.
It was the place where Yahweh guided Moses out of Egypt (after parting the Red Sea) to lead the Israelites into the land promised them through Yahweh’s promise to Abraham. It was a place where an entire generation of Israelites did not get to cross over and enter that promised land because of their disobedience, lack of faith, belief, and trust. Because of their complaining, murmuring, idolatrous worship, building a golden calf to worship, and setting up stronghold’s that brought Yahweh to anger…to the point thousands were killed by Yahweh.
The Jordan is the place where Joshua and Caleb (a new generation) had the faith in Yahweh to cross over and lead the remaining Israelites to the land that flowed with milk and honey. Yahweh sending Elijah and Elisha there was prophetic and symbolic. And, not to digress, but unless you aren’t aware Joshua is the english version of the name Yehoshua (Yeshua), meaning Yahweh is salvation or God saves/delivers. Caleb means fiercely loyal. Do you see the parallel between Joshua and Caleb and Elisha and Elijah? Let’s move on to 2 Kings 2:6-10
There they were at the Jordan River and 50 men of the sons of prophets followed and stood facing them from a distance, but this time nothing was said. Note that these men stood at a distance, not drawing near to the water. This is also prophetic for those who have eyes to see.
Elijah took his mantle (cloak) and at the river’s edge, folded it and struck the water; and it parted and the two of them crossed over the Jordan on dry ground. It is at that moment Elijah says to Elisha, “Ask! What may I do for you before I am taken away from you?” Elisha said, “Please let a double portion of your spirit be upon me.” Notice it is not a double portion of riches and wealth, but of the Spirit of Yahweh.
In verse 10, Elijah says, “You have asked a hard thing. Nevertheless, if you see me when I am taken from you, it shall be so for you; but if not, is shall not be so.”
There is an interesting parallel to Yeshua, when the sons of Zebedee (James and John) wanted Yeshua to do for them whatever they asked. In Mark 10:36-38, Yeshua says, “What do you want Me to do for you?” They said to Him, “Grant us that we may sit, one on Your right hand and the other on Your left, in Your glory.” But Yeshua said to them “You do not know what you ask. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, and be baptized with baptism that I am baptized with?
Let’s look again at Matthew 16:27, Yeshua tell his disciples that he is going to return in the glory of Yahweh, with His angels, he makes a declaration in verse 28 saying, “Assuredly, I say to you, there are some standing here who shall not taste death till they see the Son of Man coming in His kingdom.”
Let’s continue in 2 Kings 2:11-12
Then it happened, as they continued on and talked, that suddenly a chariot of fire appeared with horses of fire, and separated the two of them; and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven. And Elisha saw it, and he cried out, “My father, My father, the chariot of Israel and its horsemen!” So he saw him no more. And he took hold of his own clothes and tore them into two pieces.
When our God and Savior, Yeshua HaMashiach, came to earth as a sinless man and was crucified and hung on a cross, there was a defining moment in time when He had taken on all the sins of mankind. He had been beaten, flogged, and marred so badly that his appearance was beyond recognition. Yahweh could not look upon the sins of man and Matthew 27:46 tells us that Yeshua cried out, “Eli, Eli, Lama sabachthani?” that is, “My God, My God, what have you forsaken Me?”
You and I can not ever imagine what that moment was like for Yeshua; and yet, He did it for us and for the redemption of all mankind who would repent and believe in Him and believe He was sent for this purpose.
Matthew 27:47-50 says, Some of those who stood there, when they heard that, said, “This Man is calling for Elijah!” Immediately one of them ran and took a sponge, filled it with sour wine and put it on a reed, and offered it to Him to drink. The rest said, “Let Him alone. Let us see if Elijah will come to save Him.’ And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice, and yielded up His spirit.
Spoiler alert in case you missed it earlier! Three nights and three days later, Yahweh, His God (Spirit of Elijah), did save Him and raised Him from the dead.40 days later, He ascended into heaven to sit at the right hand of Yahweh, and a double portion of His spirit was poured out 10 days later on Pentecost.
The body of Christ has been lulled into a spirit stupor for years but the Spirit of Yeshua is stirring His remnant of Elisha’s in power and truth to restore the true house of Yahweh (Bethel) and no longer partake in the religious Jeroboam priesthood cultures of today. The Elisha’s have been given an anointing to tear down the stronghold walls of Jericho and purify the bitter water (false holy spirit) with the true Holy Spirit of Truth, and we are not standing at a distance away from the Jordan, but we have crossed over awaiting for our day when we shall be caught up in a whirlwind upon Yeshua’s return for us. Amen!
